The Bollywood Comeback

Haasan carried on acting in Award winning Tamil and Telegu movies throughout the 80's and 90's with great box office success. In 1996 the Tamil film Indian about a veteran freedom fighter's fight against corruption became a super hit breaking many box office records, as a result the producers decided to dub the film in Hindi and released it in Bollywood. This bought Kamal Haasan back to Bollywood. After the success of Indian Kamal Haasan went on to star and direct the super hit Chachi 420, this was a remake of Mrs Dougbtfire.

It was hoped with the success of these two films Kamal Haasan would this time have a longer reign in Bollywood. However things are not looking so good, since Chachi 420 all his Hindi films have been rejected. Hey Ram released in 2000 flopped despite receiving reviews that stated it as being the best film of the year. Even special appearances by Bollywood Superstars Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukerjee couldn't pull in the audience. His next release Abhay in which he bulked up and shaved his head to play the role of a psychopath was rejected on it's very first day of release.

2005 was the year for Bollywood comedies, the Anil Kapoor starer No Entry and the Akshay Kumar starer Garam Masala were amongst the most successful movies of the year. That year it was thought Kamal Haasan's genuinely funny Mumbai Express would turn things round for him, unfortunately this film also sunk at the Bollywood box office without a trace.

With Dashavatar, Haasan Suffers his Fourth Flop in Row It looks like Bollywood will never accept Kamal Hassan. Dashavatar is his fourth Hindi flop. The Tamil version of the film was released last year. The film is Haasan's most ambitious film to date, we see him play ten different roles.

Dashavatar is essentially a cat and mouse thriller between a research scientist and a corrupt ex-CIA officer. The scientist looses a Biological weapon in America. The ex-CIA officer wants the weapon for his own personal use. This begins a chase between the two to see who can get their hands on the weapon first. During the chase the film depicts the lives of many different individuals prior to the week before the 2004 boxing day Tsunami.

Upon release the film gained positive reviews and became Tamil Cinema's most successful film to date. In April this year the film was dubbed in Hindi and released in Bollywood in the hope that it would mirror it's Tamil success. However the Bollywood audience totally rejected the film.

KAMAL HAASAN'S HINDI FLOP STREAK CONTINUES

Dashavatar Actor Fails to Get a Hindi Audience :

There's no question, Kamal Haasan is the most versatile actor in India. By many he is considered to be the best actor India has ever produced. With his films he has proved that he can morph into any character he sets his mind to. However most of his successful films are made in the regional Tamil language. Haasan never seemed to get the recognition he deserved from the Hindi speaking Bollywood audience.

Haasan's entry into Bollywood films was with the 1980's super hit romantic tragedy Ek Dujhe Ke Liye. After the success of this film he starred in several Hindi films throughout the 80's and early 90's but apart from Sagaar alongside Rishi Kapoor and Geraftar with Amitabh Bachchan all his solo films sunk without a trace. As a result he moved away from Hindi cinema and concentrated on his south Indian films.

In 1987 he starred in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Nayagan in the movie he portrayed the life of an underworld don in Bombay. Through the story of this character Haasan successfully depicted the struggle faced by south Indians living in Bombay. This film did for Haasan what The Godfather did for Al Pacino. Haasan became an iconic figure. He went on to win the Indian National Award for best actor and the film also made the top 100 movies list of that year.
